frequentflier.mobi is online!

This Saturday I spent the day researching .mobi sites and building-out frequentflier.mobi from start to finish! I hadn't planned on finishing the site until next weekend so this puts me ahead of schedule.

I began with the "comps" process on Saturday. Looking for comparable websites, sites that had a similar focus or goal to mine. This was easy to do given the great resources the .mobi team has put together. I have essentially been living on dev.mobi - they have a great catalog of current .mobi sites organized by category. I looked through every single page in "travel" section as my site is travel-related.

My findings greatly influenced the design and content of the site. First I noticed that most .mobi travel sites all had a list of links on their opening page. This makes sense as anyone browsing the web on their phone wants to get to specific information - fast.

Next I found that each link usually led to either a text-entry box, or exactly the information being sought. As for the information itself, a lot of it was general information such as the address and phone number for a hotel. On the mobile web it doesn't seem like there is room for hotel reviews, amenities, etc. However thinking about this I realized that 99% of the time I go to a hotel's website just to get their main phone number. Have a link on the website that will cause your phone to dial the number certainly is a useful service.

I decided to collect all of the main contact numbers for all of the major airlines in the world. Sort them by name , and provide them as a resource to travelers. From experience I know that sometimes I just wish I had the main number to an airline without having to dial 411 and pay the $2.00 for a simple question.

For the remaining pages I tried to think of what I want when I'm on the road traveling. Some way to check your flight status seemed a given. All frequent fliers learn that it is absolutely essential to check their flight status to avoid spending hours waiting in the airport. After this I was on a roll - I added links to a traffic site as well as Zagat.mobi for quick access to restaurant reviews.

As a former graphic artist I really enjoy doing the design for these sites. I read the .mobi developers guide last week and remembered their emphasis on small graphics. I decided to keep it simple and feature the same title graphic with text for individual page headings.

A lot of my time was spent building-out the Travel Secrets section. Here I had to come-up with my own content, but make sure that it was short and to the point, and of course...useful! Luckily I have done a LOT of travel in the past three years so was full of ideas. Condensing this down into a .mobi-sized bit was tricky and it took several hours to get it right.

In the end I tested my site on dev.mobi's site evaluator and got a 4 - which means the site will display well on pretty much any mobile device that pulls-up my site. So some hardwork payed-off and I was able to finish the site in a day. In the world of house-flipping finishing a home early, in the world of domain flipping you never know what can happen!

Now it's time to hit the streets...the Internet streets that is - and start getting the word out that frequentflier.mobi has arrived!

Initial Mock-Up Of First Page Finished

I spent a couple of hours looking over other .mobi sites focusing on travel-related sites. One consistency I noticed about all sites is that the first page generally contains a list of links. With limited screen space and slow connections this makes plenty of sense.

I want the site to be a quick and easy to use resource for air travelers. Below is the initial site with source code shown below. If this design becomes finalized I will add in the META tags and clean-up this code to make sure it is optimized for search engines.

My First .mobi Flip

Hi and welcome to Adventures in Domain Name Flipping! My name is Morgan and I'll be your resident flipper. Domain Name flipping is a relatively new concept that involves finding a domain name that is worth relatively little and "renovating" the site and getting more traffic to the site. This can easily be compared to house flipping where a "distressed" home is renovated and landscaped to increase its curb appeal and increase the value of the property.

This will be my first .mobi flip which makes it a good challenge. .mobi is a fairly new TLD (Top Level Domain) geared towards mobile users. These websites are generally slimmed-down websites optimized for mobile phones with content geared towards mobile use. This means quick information access, short load times, and very little screen real estate. One of the most exciting things about this flip is that it will be the first .mobi site that I have developed as well as the first .mobi flip I have done.

Before doing a flip - you first need a domain name. I purchased frequentflier.mobi soon-after the .mobi TLD was announced. To know if your flip has potential it is crucial to have the domain professionally appraised by a domain name appraisal service. Both Sedo and Go Daddy offer this service however Sedo's is far more detailed and accurate. This flip is a bit difference as we're taking a brand-new site which means we have to start the traffic from 0. Domain flipping is often done with existing sites that are already getting traffic. I like to start with fresh sites so I can have full control over how the site evolves.

I purchased frequentflier.mobi for $39.95/year. Sedo appraised the domain with no work done to it at $500.00. If you take a step back just to look at the numbers - I could already make over 10 times my money. Domain Name flipping is a high potential game and I'm looking for at least 20 times my initial investment. If you were able to obtain these types of returns with house flipping you could retire after your first flip!

My time line for this project is 2 months. When starting with a brand-new site the flip will always take longer since you must generate some initial traffic to the site. It takes a good 4-6 weeks before your site will show-up in the search engines. It also takes a while to perfect your Google Adwords campaigns to ensure you get the best targeted traffic to the site. The development is the shortest part and should take 1-2 weeks. Below is the expected project time line:

Nov 1 - frequentflier.mobi built and listed in all major search engines

Nov 3 - Begin Google Adwords campaign to generate initial targeted traffic to the site

Nov 15 - Begin Link Exchange programs to increase site exposure.

Dec 1 - Optimize Adwords campaign, re-list in all search engines

Dec 15 - Final tweaks and enhancements, ensure traffic is at expected levels

Dec 18 - List site for sale on Sedo

So stay tuned as I take this site from an unknown domain floating out in the domain name ether and turn it into a full-fledged .mobi site. Thanks for reading and please leave me a comment if you find this information useful or if you have any questions or comments. More to come!
